A Bigger Picture (8): The Last Hope

The trio ran quickly, though the others were gaining on them.  The green penguin was the first to reach them, tugging at Dot's shirt.

Gary, Dot, and Jet Pack Guy tried to lose them by zig-zagging around.  But, it was useless.  There was no escaping this mob.

"I have an idea!" yelled Gary.  They looped around and headed for the Town.

By the time the three got there, the crowd had fallen a bit behind.  No one in the mob's midst had gone through EPF endurance training like the trio, after all.  Nonetheless, they still were determined to catch the villains.

The three ran into the empty Clothes Shop.  They locked the door quickly.

"Come on!" Gary yelled as he began to scale the steps to the owner's office.  The two others followed.  Jet Pack Guy, the last one of the three to reach the top, locked the door.

"When I stumbled on the Persuasion Powder, I knew it could be disastrous in the wrong hands," Gary said, trying to remain calm. He began floating his hands along part of the wall in the office, obviously looking for something.

There was a rattle downstairs.  The mob was pushing on the door, trying to force their way in.  Despite this, Gary calmly continued his mission, acting as though nothing was happening.  "So, to prepare for such a situation, I created a reversal method that I then hid right around....here!"  He pushed on an area of the wall that he noticed sagged just a bit.

A small section of the wall, shaped like a rectangle, flipped, revealing a sleek device.  It was white with a few black streaks in certain areas.  There was a tall rod with a blinking red light on the top of it with a suction cup on the bottom.

Some glass was heard breaking.  Yelling, which had been faint, at best, before, was now much clearer.  There were numerous rushed footsteps from below.  Then a new, clearer type of footstep was heard as some climbed the steps to the second locked door.

Gary once again ignored these ominous signs.  He carefully took the device out of the wall.  The rectangle flipped back into place, leaving no sign that anything had happened.

"Jet Pack Guy, please guard the door," said G, unphased by the shaking of the door.  "Everything will be fine."

Jet Pack Guy listened to his orders.  He pushed himself against the door.

"Dot come with me," Gary commanded.

The two went to the roof and locked yet another door.  Gary positioned the device directly in the middle of the roof and placed the suction cup firmly there.  He toiled with the machine.

Dot pushed herself against the door, much like Jet Pack Guy had with the one before.  She listened closely to her surroundings.  Eventually, she heard wood crack as several penguins pushed on the door below at the same time.  She heard a yell.

Jet Pack Guy had fallen.  Door two had fallen.  There was only one defense left.

Her's.

Gary continued pushing buttons on the device.  He looked flustered and had begun to mutter things quietly from time to time.

Dot's door was soon being pushed.  She had to use all her strength in order to hold it.  She felt a piece of wood in her back, but she continued to barricade it.

"There's not enough time!" Gary yelled.  He quickly pushed a few more buttons.  There was a ding.

Gary's voice cracked with emotion, though he tried to stay strong. "It has been an absolute pleasure to know you," he said.

He then climbed up on the ledge of the back of the Clothes Shop.  He began to climb down the side with speed.

Dot yelled.  She felt betrayed....again!

A Revolutionist, who was skilled at pick-pocketing, had made his way to the front of the line trying to break the roof's door.  The door opened with a click.

The penguins began pulling at Dot, overwhelming her.

"GARY!!" Dot screamed.  "GARY!!!  WHY?!?!"
