A Bigger Picture (2): The One Detail

Rookie's look of confusion evaporated from his face.  It was replaced by the most un-Rookie like thing: a smirk.

He clapped his hands mockingly and tauntingly, sarcastically saying, "Woo!  Great job!  Yeah, let's hear it, let's hear it for G, for the incomparable Gary the Gadget Guy!  Woo!"

It was clear that the old Rookie was gone forever.  He would never make an appearance again.  In his place was a meanly sarcastic character with no good nature.

Rookie stopped clapping, but his new snarky personality remained.  "It took you this long!" he said, flapping his flippers madly in the air for emphasis.

Dot struggled for words.  "But....why?" was all she could manage.

Rookie turned from Gary to her.  Dot immediately regretted opening her beak.  Those new eyes, those newly unleashed eyes of his were filled to the brim with hatred and greed and....what was that other thing she saw, the thing that scared her most?  Loathing.  That's what it was....

Rookie addressed Dot, staring into her bewildered eyes.  "I suppose you deserve an answer, pretty little girl," he said with the greatest amount of disgust.

Rookie began his tale by leaning against a filing cabinet near him.  He acted incredibly laid back, something Herbert did as well.

"It all started when I first arrived on this little island.  I noticed how....horrible the public services were.  The PSA was so far removed from the island.  New missions took months to come across, I learned.  There was no guide in the darkness.  No leader to rule the people.  It was all wrong.  So, I decided to do something!" Rookie proclaimed.  You could see burning passion he had for the subject.  This was something that had been locked up for years in him and now that it had been released, it was causing a wild fire that would not easily be extinguished.

Rookie began pacing back in forth, flapping his arms for effect.  "I formed an activist group - the Revolutionists, we call ourselves.  The group seeks to change the direction of this train wreck.

"It was soon after we started that I decided to sneak my way into this little organization.  I took on the persona of an oblivious..." he paused for effect, "....rookie.

"I purposely added little touches to keep up my innocent prowess.  And despite these blunders, I rose through the ranks, proving that this government really is corrupt....with the Director rewarding fools."

Hearing Rookie bring out some vocabulary was quite striking to Dot.  This new despicable version continued to shock her.  And as he did, she kept trying to find reasons to deny the legitimacy of the claims against Rookie.

She could find none.

"As I went along I was rewarded some valuable information.  My group researched and prepped," Rookie said.  "We have grown stronger and larger in numbers.  More people joined the band wagon after the little debockle that was Operation: Blackout.  When the government couldn't protect their citizens until after the storm broke.  When the government waited a whole week to go looking for the precious inventor."  He motioned at G.  "That polar bear's plan turned out to be P.R. gold."  He turned and gave them a sarcastic, sweet smile.  "So, thank you for that.

"And now, a new world begins!  A brighter one!  Our activists are ready.  When it's all over, you agents won't have anywhere left to stand.  That is, of course, unless you repent."  He looked around waiting for a response.  "No one?  That's what I figured.  You three never were....the brightest.

"Just remember this is all thanks to you," said Rookie, tilting his head all sweet-like.

"The revolution..." Rookie was practically yelling now, "....has begun!"

As he said those last few words, Rookie thrust his arms out to his sides forcefully, showing his wingspan and demonstrating importance.  The fifth button on his casual Hawaiian shirt burst off and rolled on the floor, finishing a full 360 degree cycle at least nine times.  It stopped rolling and spinned.  And then fell.

It exploded, causing a ripple of air that sent the three true EPF agents to the floor, Rookie having clinged to the desk.  The boom would not go unnoticed.

As Dot laid on the floor, she made a connection.  She was smart girl, always sharp with her wits, so she had begun to take all that she knew from the last few minutes and try to learn more.

She noticed something very important very much too late.  One detail, one abnormality, one anomaly was about to change everything.

Gary had said that he had given all the part-time agents the day off....so why did those two workers who had waited behind her as she reminisced about the past on the doorstep show up for work?

Right on cue, the elevator dinged and in came the workers....and a few others.

You see, Rookie had learned of this day off and knew that Gary was planning to rip his mask off that day.  These new penguins had been ordered by Rookie to act like they were going about their daily business in the Everyday Phoning Facility, just as the two receptionist phonies were told to do on this day.  They would come down when there was a signal.

An arrow came bolting through the EPF screen, sending sparks everywhere.

It was the Shot Heard Round the Command Room.

It was the opening of a new feud.  A feud that ironically involved family.

To Be Continued
