A Bigger Picture (6): A Tall Order

Gary, Jet Pack Guy, and Dot quickly jetted to the Tallest Mountain.  Aside from thoughts of the job ahead, it was a rather peaceful ride.  At one point, Dot thought she heard yelling and a blast of air; she told herself it was probably nothing.

As Gary had requested, they landed in the middle of the forest at the base of the mountain.  He figured it was better to catch the enemy by surprise, instead of just flying to the top of the mountain and revealing themselves straight away.

They ran the rest of the way.  When they got to the base of the mountain, Gary got three computer chip-like devices out of his lab coat.

"New technology I've been working on...I sure hope it works..." Gary said.  He pressed a small button on the left side of the device and was sling-shot upwards hundreds of feet without a sound.  He hung in the air near the top of the mountain, only a few feet from the edge of the very top, waiting for the other two agents.

Realizing this, Jet Pack Guy and Dot activated their device.  They were flung in the air as well, feeling air rush past them along the way.  The two were now level with Gary.

Gary now pressed the activation button and started to drop to the ground.  Dot gasped, though no noise came out due to the sound barrier the device provided.

However, Gary didn't continue to drop.  Instead, he landed on a transparent floor a short length down that had been created by the device.  The floor connected to a small ledge on the mountain.  Gary soundlessly ran to it and the transparent floor vanished.

Dot and Jet Pack Guy followed his lead.  The three climbed towards the top of the mountain, afraid to see what awaited them.

As Dot reached the final foot hole, she swore that she hit something with our hand.  When she looked at where her hand was, however, she saw nothing there.  She brushed it off as nothing, as she had with several things that day.

The three finally reached the top.

What they saw was a single soul; there were no supplies, no partners in crime.  There was only Rookie.

"I've been expecting you, my friends," he said in a calm, snarky tone.

"Rookie, give it up," said Gary, trying to be strong, "it's not worth it."

"You have so much to learn, Gary," Rookie said, shaking his head.  "This is the only thing that matters to me!  The only thing!"  His voice began to tremble as he got louder.  Tears began to roll.  He took a step back with each syllable.  "It's my life's work!  To create a better future!  To improve the mess caused by you people!  There's a bigger picture than....than this!" he said, disgust clearly evident in his voice.

"We will stop you!" Jet Pack Guy yelled.  "You can't hide from us!"

Rookie shook his head.  "This is so much bigger than you think!"  The trembling of passion was now absent from his voice.  The tears were gone.  What was left was a serious tone.  "You'll never catch us!  There are too many of us!  You may squash one ember, but you'll never stop the wildfire!"

Fireworks went up in the air from the Town.  They all turned to look at them.

"That's my cue," Rookie said.  He was at the edge of the mountain now.  He released his footing on the snow and fell back.

Down.
 Down.
  Down.
   Down.
    Down.

Dot ran to the side, followed by the other two.  There was no way anyone would survive that fall!

Rookie continued to fall, a smile of triumph showing clearly on his face.  A sleek, black, flying Aqua Grabber, which he had activated with the push of the fourth button on his shirt, flew beneath him, perfectly in line with his body.  Rookie fell into it, the top closed, and, in a nano-second, he had activated the turbo function and had disappeared.

Dot felt relief that Rookie hadn't fell to his doom and then a fresh wave of pain at his betrayal.

The three turned towards the main part of the island, where fireworks were still flying into the air.

What they didn't know was that two agents had ambushed Herbert's new camp, whose location was unknown to the EPF, and had obtained a file with every secret agent's name and address.  What they didn't know was that the Revolutionists had captured each one and thrown them into a secret location.

Rookie had planted a file full of fake intentions to lure Dot, Gary, and Jet Pack Guy here so that the deed could be done.  The fireworks signaled that the capture mission was complete and that he no longer needed to distract the three agents.

Dot, Jet Pack Guy, and Gary were the last EPF agents left.

Phase 2 of the plan was now complete.  But, the fun still wasn't over.
