Quest for the Golden Puffle 3 (2): Office Oddity

Alaska and Yukon sat at their desks in the EPF offices.  They had been employed by the EPF for a few months now - ever since Mr. Sir fired them - but things hadn't been improving.  The thrill of adventure was gone and in its wake laid mounds of paperwork.  They both missed their previous job greatly.

Then came the call.

Alaska had been typing away when the phone began to ring.  She picked it up, assuming it was Henry again, telling the two of new reports to file and ect, ect, ect......

"Alaska?!" said a man with a harried voice that was barely whisper.

"Yes?" said Alaska, confused and caught off guard.  "May I ask who this is?"

"It's Mister Sir.  Regulus Sir.  I know you must think that I'm a dreadful person, but I need to speak to you.  And it has to be in person.  Get the rest of the day off and come meet me at the Coffee Shop in twenty minutes.  Bring the boy, too.  Please.  Hurry."

And just like that, the phone call ended.

Alaska sat back in her chair thinking about what had just happened.  Didn't Sir hate them?  Why the anxiety on his end of the phone?  Why did they have to take the whole rest of the day off?

"What's wrong, Alaska?" asked Yukon, who had been eating a slice of pizza.

Alaska thought over whether or not they should go.  It could be a dangerous trap.  She liked danger.

Alaska gave a big smile.  "We have a job to do," she said.

--------------------

Twenty minutes later, the two penguins stood outside the Coffee Shop.  Yukon held the door open for Alaska as they entered the bustling building.  The two scanned the various couches that stood in the room, but found Sir nowhere.  Then, she saw a man in a black hoodie in the corner.  She approached him.  "Sir?" she asked.

The man turned and, sure enough, it was the man they were looking for.  "Keep your voice down," he whispered, full of nerves.  "Sit down, please."

Yukon and Alaska sat on the couch, far removed from any other penguins.  "OK, I have some very important things to tell you, but we don't have a lot of time.  Something is going to happen, and only you can stop it," he began.

Sir paused and then went on.  "The Caster is alive.  She found me in the woods when we came to get you two from the destroyed temple.  She told me to fire you two and tell you that she was gone.  She's been using me for months in order to cut down on security around the island.  She wants to go and find Rockhopper.  But, I have no clue what she has planned."

Regulus paused again as he scanned the room to check if anyone was listening.  Even while he talked, his eyes darted around the room.

"She left my house this morning.  Whatever she's planning......it's coming so-"

Sir never got to finish his sentence.  At that moment, the glass of the front window blew into millions of tiny pieces.  Before gravity could bring the glass to the floor, a green haze surrounded it and caused the cluster of glass to levitate in the air.  Penguins began to flee the shop from the two exits.  Within seconds, only three remained.

Alaska and Yukon turned, mesmerized.  Meanwhile, Sir sat frozen with fear.

The blob that was the Caster floated in, letting the glass fall to the floor where not a single penguin still stood.  "I knew you would blab," she said to Sir.  Then, in a flash of light, she flew towards him and picked him up.  Sir screamed as the Caster zipped out of the room quickly, with him in tow.

"It's true, you know!" the Caster yelled back.

  1. Call me old-fashioned, but I would have left the cliffhanger right after the glass broke. Nice story. :)
